About the artist

Nataša Prosenc Stearns is a visual artist and filmmaker, who works with video, film and digital techniques, exploring innovative strategies in visual and narrative expressions. She is known for creative use of non-gallery spaces and large multi-channel projections. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where she created her first videos and later installations and films. The Fulbright Grant took her to Los Angeles, where she obtained her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Her project Gladiators represented Slovenia at the 48th Venice Biennial and won her the Prešeren Foundation Award. She has received a series of other grants and awards, and appeared for the second time at the Venice Biennial in 2015 as part of the exhibition We Must Risk Delight, Twenty Artists from Los Angeles. Her works are found in national and international permanent exhibitions, and have been featured in such institutions as the Douloun Museum of Art in Shanghai, Circulo de bellas artes and ARCO Fair in Madrid, Kunstlerwerkstatt in Munich, Bevilacqua la masa in Venice, Spazio Erasmus Brera in Milan, Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Israel, LACE – Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions,Ruth Bachofner Gallery andLancaster Museum of Art and History.

Delo Plazilci, Dolgo potovanje Nataše Prosenc Stearns je gibljivi kolaž, ki temeljina plastenju video podob.Ustvarja svet, ki ni antropocentri­čen, ampak integrira člove­ško telo v okolje, ki se nenehno širi, krči, spreminja. Video instalacija, ki vključuje projekcije štirih gibljivih slik in ogledala, prikazuje tranzicijo bitij, ki v neskončnem gibanju sledijo vselej spreminjajoči se poti, drug drugemu in želji po cilju, ki se nenehno izmika. Gibanje se postopoma spreminja v kaos, preplet telesnih delov, zemlje, stopinj, vejevja in brezen. Podobe, ki se v zrcaljenju ponavljajo v neskončnost, spominjajo na jamske poslikave, le da so namesto živali upodobljeni ljudje.

Človeško telo je že od nekdaj center dela Nataše Prosenc Stearns. Telo se v Plazilcih povezuje z naravo, razpada, se razteleša, kakor bi hotelo odgovoriti na vprašanje, kaj je še človeškega v času, ki je podrejen tehnologiji, zaradi česar smo vse bolj brezčutni, odtujeni drug drugemu, oropani človeškega.
